Peddie School Library to Revolutionize Education

The Peddie School will dedicate this spring a new high-tech library that will give students access to e-mail, databases, CD ROMs and online services.

Students at the independent school near Princeton University won't have to leave their dorm rooms to use the library. Through a fiber-optic information network, students will be able to open an encyclopedia, read works by Shakespeare, research the rain forests, or ask for help. Day students will also be able to access the library from their home computers via modems. Boarding students who don't arrive in September with a PC will be able to use more than 60 networked campus computers.

The library will feature about 450 CD ROMs, a computerized catalog system, and 30 computer workstations. A computer lab in the library will be available for enhancing classroom instruction in all departments.

Through e-mail, the entire Peddie community can communicate via computer-from library, to dorm room, to faculty lounge, to a day student's home 20 miles away. Students will have private mailboxes on the network and access to computer tools such as word-processing programs and spreadsheets.
