LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Dear Readers:

As we begin our fourth full year of publication, we have new features to unveil. The most significant is the addition of a section called "Computers and Controversy." In this issue, we begin with two opinions of PC-WRITE. In the future, we hope to offer other stimulating controversies that our readers want to share. Please take advantage of this forum to air your concerns about computers and writing; by all means, respond to the pieces we include here.

We're especially proud of our new logo and two-color format. It feels almost as if we've gone high tech. Our special thanks to Edith Greene, our graphic artist at Michigan Tech.

But we are most pleased by the quality of the articles we can share with you in this issue and the issues of the coming year. In this issue, we have Gail Hawisher's important review of studies of word processing; the overview of recent activity in this area should prove invaluable to all of us trying to stay current with ongoing research. We also include Richard Larsen's practical look at the accommodations teachers must make when they want to use computers in the classroom, but the budget won't allow for much equipment. And we have our first

international piece from Twente University in the Netherlands: Carel Jansen et al. describe ALEXIS, a program that provides feedback on texts, reminiscent of RSVP, CAMELOT, or WRITER/GRADER/READER.

Our review section is especially full in this issue as well. We include Smithson's lengthy review of Milliken's THE WRITING WORKSHOP; Rose Norman's review of POETICS, a metrical scansion CAI program; and Ken Autrey's PRINTOUT column with book reviews of Writing and Computers and The Scholar's Personal Computing Handbook.

In short, we are excited about the quality of work we have to share in the growing field of computers and compositions. Our thanks to all our contributors and readers who are making Computers and Composition a continued success.
