Michigan Technological University will offer its third annual summer workshop on June 13-24,1988 for English teachers who want to incorporate computers into their writing-intensive classes. Workshop sessions will be run by Dr. Cynthia L. Selfe, co-editor of Computers & Composition, and will cover such topics as setting up a computer-supported writing lab and classroom, evaluating computer use in writing programs, teaching techniques for computer supported classes, and grading with computers. All sessions will be held in a computer lab/classroom especially designed for English teachers.
No previous computer experience is necessary for participants. All participants will be given one-on-one help in learning and developing computer applications for their own classrooms and programs. Teachers from all instructional levels are welcome!

Once again this year, Iona College will offer a Summer Institute in Educational Computing for teachers. The institute will run for eight days from July 5 through July 14. Sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. each day. The keynote speaker for the institute will be Dr. Janet Murray, principal research scientist in the Department of Humanities at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Each day's session will feature a speaker followed by workshop sessions. The topics scheduled for the institute include desktop publishing, advanced uses of databases and spreadsheets, programming in C, uses of LOGOWRITER in language arts, and telecommunications in education. A workshop entitled "The Least You Should Know About Computers" will be offered for those with no previous computer experience. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will offer its 36th Technical Writer's Institute on June 7-10, 1988 on the Troy, New York campus. The program will devote two days to fundamental writing and communication issues and two days to advanced communication strategies in government, medical, and science writing, as well as computer documentation, on-line documentation, and electronic publishing.
Recognized experts will provide workshops in such areas as audience analysis, organizing to write, interviewing subject area specialists, organizational issues in writing groups, writing to specifications, analyzing style, legal issues in writing, writing for the government, writing for the medical/chemical industry, writing for scientific audiences, and evaluating documentation.
Similar presenters will focus on more advanced topics such as writing for specific audiences, managing the documentation development cycle, publication development planning, implementing and evaluating desktop and commercial publishing systems, evaluating documentation, designing the human-computer interface--on-line tutorial design, designing and manipulating interactive systems--the changing roles in documentation development, and usability and quality testing.
The fee for the four-day institute is $900. For those wishing to attend only the advanced sessions, the fee is $550. Specific multiple attendee rates are available on request. The American Association of Philosophy Teachers, the Committee on Computers of the American Philosophical Association, and the Department of Philosophy at Dartmouth College announce the Third National Conference on Computers and Philosophy, to be held in Hanover, New Hampshire on August 24-27, 1988. The call is for presentations on intellectual, ethical, and practical problems in the development of philosophical software as well as for papers on all other aspects of the relationships between philosophy and computers. Papers on Artificial Intelligence are especially invited. The conference will also serve as a showcase for instructional software for use in philosophy classes.
