Eleventh Annual Writing Centers Association Conference

The eleventh annual Writing Centers Association Conference for the East Central Region will be held on May 5 and 6, 1989, at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. This year's theme will be "Empowering Our Students; Empowering Our Writing Centers." Keynote speakers will include Andrea Lunsford (The Ohio State University), and Chet Laine and Lucille Schultz (University of Cincinnati). Concurrent sessions will focus on such matters as tutor training, high school/college collaboration, disabled students, tutoring techniques, writing across the curriculum, writing center/administration relations, sharing sessions, and open forums.

Fifth World Conference on Computers in Education

The Fifth World Conference in Computer Education (WCCE/90) is to be held in Sydney, Australia, July 9-13, 1990. This international conference on computers in education is held every five years and is a major event in the computer education field. The conference is organized by the Technical Committee on Education (TC-3) of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

Papers are welcome from all nations, and from individuals or representatives of organizations, regions, or nations. Authors should submit original, unpublished papers in English on themes in computer education. WCCE/90 will stress the ways computers interact with learning through six major streams, miniconferences, and non-paper sessions. Draft papers must be received no later than October 1, 1989. Notification of acceptance will be by January 1990.

A special early registration rate is offered to authors whose papers are accepted for publication in the Conference Proceedings.

Computers in Writing-Intensive Classrooms

This two-week workshop is designed for teachers of English who want to incorporate computers into their writing-intensive classes. All sessions are held in Michigan Tech's Center for Computer-Assisted Language Instruction, a facility designed especially for English teachers. During the 10, six-hour work days, teachers will work on computer networks, receive one-on-one help in developing computer applications suited to their own educational settings, review commercial software and CAI, and read much of the current research on using word processing in composition classes.

This workshop, which incorporates theory, research, and practice in the field of computers and composition studies, is open to teachers at all grade levels. NO PREVIOUS COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE IS NECESSARY. Both Macintosh and IBM computers are available for participants' use.
